₹1 Lakh laptop under ₹50000?

A semiconductor factory will be built in Gujarat by Vedanta and Foxconn for Rs 1.54 lakh crore ($20 billion) in a major step toward Make In India. Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta, told CNBC-TV18 that ‘Made in India’ semiconductors could have a big impact on finished product prices.

“When the glass and semiconductor chip become available, ₹1 lakh laptop can be priced at Rs 40,000 or less,” he said on CNBC-TV18.

“In the near future, the glass that is currently produced in Taiwan and Korea will also be produced in India,” said Agarwal, the founder of one of the largest mining companies in the country.

It is not a question of if, but when, India will become one of the largest manufacturers of silicon chips and semiconductors. However, it will take a considerable amount of time to reduce the prices of finished tech products by 60 percent. Furthermore, it will require substantial volumes.

Semiconductor Plant Site in India

Earlier, Vedanta and Foxconn were evaluating multiple sites across several countries for the upcoming plant in Gujarat. They have hired industry experts to evaluate possible sites in Gujarat. “When the Centre announced the ‘India Semiconductor Mission’ in December 2021, they began looking for locations across India (and then selected Gujarat),” Nehra explained.

A site for the project may be finalised in the next couple of weeks, Nehra said, noting that the promoters are currently evaluating sites in Gujarat on technical aspects, commercial viability, connectivity, and utility.
