To protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress, Wikipedia will black out the English language version, the organization said in a statement.

According to the statement, the website, which is quite popular among the internet users with millions of visitors daily, will go dark for 24 hours. Not only Wikimedia, several other online communities such as Reddit, Boing Boing and others have announced plans to go dark in protest as well.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia said the bills are a threat to the free, open, and secure web. Wales was the first to announce the move on his Twitter account Monday,

The Wikimedia Foundation said in a statement, “If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States.”

The legislation supporters belonging to movie and music industry say that legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs. This sector often sees its products sold illegally.

The Stop Online Piracy Act in the US House of Representatives and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate are designed to crack down on sales of pirated US products overseas.

As per a recent study conducted by market researchers it has been discovered that Google has bagged the top position of being the most visited site among US users followed by Facebook.

Nielsen stated that Google each month managed to attract 153 million visitors while Facebook had close to about 138 visitors. The third position was bagged by Yahoo which had 138 million visitors every month.
