Now, what if you don’t want to pay Rs. 1 lakh for the new iPhone? In that case, you should take a look at the iPhone XR. While this is the “cheap” iPhone this year, with starting price of Rs. 76,900, it is not cheap by any measure and it doesn’t look cheap from any angle. Its design has the bits that make an iPhone premium and classy.
If you have used the iPhone 8, you will find the iPhone XR very familiar. This is because it uses the same Series 7000 aluminum frame and similar glass cover. But it’s bigger, although not as big as the iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone XR uses a 6.1-inch LCD screen, which to me looks as good as any phone’s screen. It’s bright, shows vibrant colors and doesn’t look inferior in any perceptible way compared to the iPhone XS screen.
Just like any other iPhone, the iPhone XR too is a well built phone. And it too is extremely shiny. On its body you will see smudges and oily fingerprints within 10 minutes of using it. Unlike the other two iPhones, it comes in some funky colors: Yellow and blue are the ones I really liked, while some may prefer the red variant. The size of the iPhone XR is good enough, it’s neither too big nor too small. Actually, in hands it feels better than the iPhone XS because it is slightly lighter, and its frame has matte finish that helps in gripping it more surely.
Now, just like how it is with the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR too comes packed with the good stuff under the hood. It uses same A12 Bionic that is inside the more expensive iPhones, and has the same 12MP primary camera. It is missing the zoom camera, but it still offers the portrait mode feature using some AI and smart software tricks, similar to how Google does it on Pixel phones that too come with single camera.
Given that all three iPhones – the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR – are quite similar to earlier iPhones in their design, it is their new cameras and the A12 Bionic that is going to define them. And these are the aspects that I will be in a position to talk in detail once I have spent more time with the new iPhones. So far, my impression is that the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR will please the iPhone fans because they continue with everything that has won phones like the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X millions of the satisfied consumers. But they probably won’t appeal to people who were expecting Apple to change the game, or bring something entirely new, with the iPhone XS and friends. The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR are the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 made better. And not iPhone reinvented.
